7 Challenging Ball Handling & Passing Drills You Can Do Alone

Mistakes are OK — that's how you get better. Challenge yourself with these drills.

The Ground Rules

Before you start:

  • Eyes up at all times — no looking at the ball
  • Pound the ball hard — weak dribbles create weak habits
  • Cross the ball as fast as you can — speed builds speed
  • Full speed — if you slow down to get through the drill, you're training the wrong speed

These drills are challenging. You're supposed to struggle at first.

The 7-Drill Sequence

Drill 1 — Pound & Pass (10 reps each hand)

Pound the ball with your right hand, then fire a pass to the wall or rebounder. Receive, switch hands, repeat.

Drill 2 — Pound, Cross, Pass (10 reps each hand)

Add a crossover before the pass. Stay low on the cross.

Drill 3 — Pound, Through Legs, Pass (10 reps each hand)

Through-legs dribble, then a sharp pass. The through-legs move must be quick, not slow.

Drill 4 — Behind Back, Pass (10 reps each hand)

Behind-the-back dribble into a pass. This replicates a real game action — using a behind-back to create a better passing angle.

Drill 5 — Speed Dribble, Stop, Pass (4 reps each direction)

Full-speed dribble for 10 feet, hard stop, chest pass. This trains the ability to stop under control and make a clean pass.

Drill 6 — Combo: Cross → Through → Behind → Pass

All three moves before the pass. This is the hardest drill. 5 reps each starting hand.

Drill 7 — Eyes-Up Freestyle (2 minutes)

Free dribble — any moves — but your eyes must be fixed on the wall or on a target you pick. Never look down.

Progression

Start at comfortable speed and increase over 2–3 weeks. Once you can complete the sequence without looking down, you've built the foundation for game-speed handle.
