Dynamic Warm-Up Drill: 6v6 With Hot Hitter

A warm-up should prepare athletes to compete — not just elevate their heart rate.

Why This Drill Works

Traditional warm-ups (passing lines, static stretching, tossed balls) don't prepare players for the chaotic, decision-heavy environment of a game. This drill from coach Tod Mattox solves that by placing players in a live game structure from the first minute of practice.

The result: players arrive at the technical portion of practice already dialed in — not still waking up.

Setup

  • Two full teams of 6
  • One team has a designated hot hitter — a middle who is the only player allowed to take a full swing
  • Coach enters the ball from the sideline

How It Works

Round 1: Team with Hot Hitter Receives

  1. Coach tosses ball to the hot-hitter side
  2. They pass, set, and the middle swings
  3. The opposing team's only goal: get the ball back in play with a controlled pass

Defending Team Rules

  • No blocking (keeps the drill moving)
  • Immediate transition after receiving the hit
  • They work on reading the attack angle and moving quickly

Scoring

  • Rotate the hot hitter role every 3 minutes
  • Play to 7 points, winner serves

Coaching Focus Points

  • Passers: Are they reading the middle's approach and moving early?
  • Setter: Is the set consistent enough to be attacked at full speed?
  • Middle: Is the approach clean, even in warm-up conditions?

Variation: Rotate Hot Hitter

Instead of one player being the permanent hot hitter, rotate by position on each play. This trains all players to be ready to attack off a quick first ball.
