Middle Blocker Footwork: The Two-Step Blocking Technique

When the set is fast, every step counts. Here's how elite middles still get there.

When to Use the Two-Step Approach

Standard blocking footwork (3-step crossover) works well on medium and slow sets. Against a fast set to the quick or slide, the middle blocker is often late and needs a shorter, more direct path.

The two-step approach sacrifices some coverage for speed. Used correctly, the blocker arrives on time with proper hand position.

The Mechanics

Step 1: Turn Step

  • Plant the outside foot
  • Turn the hips toward the target
  • This step covers lateral distance quickly

Step 2: Crossover

  • Bring the inside leg across the body
  • Stay low — don't rise on this step
  • Eyes on the setter's hands

Jump: Single-Leg Takeoff

  • Because the blocker is late, the approach is short
  • Jump from the crossover leg
  • Drive the arms up and forward aggressively

Hand Positioning on the Fast Set

Because the blocker arrives late:

  • Hands must push slightly outside the body line to reach the ball
  • Turn hands inward — this is "shaping" the ball
  • Curvature directs the block back to the center of the court

If hands are flat (perpendicular to the net), the ball deflects out of bounds. Shaped hands keep the ball in play.

Coaching the Technique

Common mistakes:

  1. Taking too big a turn step (loses lateral speed)
  2. Rising on the crossover (reduces control at jump)
  3. Flat hands (block goes out)

Progression:

  1. Slow walk-through with verbal cues
  2. Half-speed with shadowing (no ball)
  3. Full speed with a tossed ball
  4. Live practice against the setter
