A step-by-step progression for teaching and perfecting serve receive technique for youth and high school volleyball programs.

Volleyball: Serve Receive Progression Drill

Players: 6–12 | Duration: 20 minutes | Equipment: Volleyballs, net

Stage 1: Platform Foundation (5 min)

Without ball:

●Pair players facing each other, 8 feet apart
●Practice forearm platform position: arms together, elbows straight, thumbs parallel
●Toss to partner, partner bumps back — focus on form only

Key coaching points:

●Platform should be angled toward target (setter position)
●Move feet to the ball — never reach
●Contact point: forearms below the wrist, above the elbow

Stage 2: Short Court Passing (8 min)

●Serving player tosses from 10 feet away (same side of net)
●Receiver passes to setter position (target player or cone)
●Rotate every 5 successful passes

Success target: 4 of 5 passes within 3 feet of target

Stage 3: Full Court Serve Receive (7 min)

●Server serves from the end line (underhand first, then overhand)
●Receiver in serve-receive position on opposite side
●Must call the ball verbally before passing

Coaching focus:

●Early movement: step to ball before contact
●Keep eyes on server’s contact point
●Communicate before the ball comes over the net
