Mirror Drill — Defensive Footwork

A reaction-based drill for developing defensive footwork, lateral speed, and anticipation across any sport.

Mirror Drill — Defensive Footwork

Players: 2 per pair | Duration: 8 minutes | Equipment: 2 cones (markers)

Setup

Two players face each other, 3–5 feet apart. Place one cone behind each player as a back boundary.

How It Works

●Player 1 = Offensive player (leader) — moves laterally, changes direction randomly
●Player 2 = Defensive player (mirror) — must stay directly opposite Player 1 at all times

Rounds: 20 seconds on / 15 seconds rest × 4 rounds, then switch roles

Scoring (Optional)

The defender scores a point every time they successfully stay mirrored. The offense scores a point every time they create a full-step gap.

Progressions

●Basic: Side-to-side only (2D)
●Intermediate: Add forward/backward movement
●Advanced: Offense can use ball (basketball dribble or soccer dribble) to add realistic pressure

Coaching Points

●Stay in a low, athletic stance (bend the knees, not the back)
●Short, choppy steps — never cross your feet
●Keep your eyes on the offensive player’s hips (not the ball or their head)
●React, don’t predict
