The Facility Constraint Reality
Most amateur and youth programs operate under facility constraints that elite programs don't face. A 90-minute gym slot split between three teams. Outdoor fields available only 3 evenings per week. Sharing space with four other sports simultaneously.
These constraints don't have to limit athlete development — but they require intentional scheduling and practice design that maximizes every available minute.
Start With Time Accounting
Before optimizing, know exactly how your current practice time is being used. Track one full week of practice:
- Time spent on setup/breakdown
- Time spent waiting (athletes idle between activities)
- Time spent in instruction vs. active practice
- Percentage of athletes actively engaged at any moment
Most programs discover that 20–30% of practice time is low-value — idle time, long lines, slow transitions. This is your optimization opportunity.
Maximize Active Repetitions Per Athlete
The #1 practice optimization principle: every athlete should be moving and actively practicing as much of the time as possible.
Station rotation design:
Instead of one coach demonstrating while 20 athletes watch, design 4–5 simultaneous stations. Each athlete gets 5x the repetitions in the same time.
No-line drills:
Design activities that inherently involve all athletes simultaneously. Partner drills, small-sided games, and constraint-based activities are far more efficient than single-file line drills.
Active waiting:
When lines are unavoidable, give waiting athletes a skill task (juggling, wall touches, partner passing) rather than standing idle.
Shared Facility Protocols
When sharing facility space with other teams or sports:
Space assignment:
Agree on explicit space boundaries before the session begins. Boundaries that drift mid-practice create conflict.
Noise protocols:
Loud verbal coaching in a shared gym can disrupt other teams. Use hand signals, whistle patterns, or practice-section-specific communication systems.
Setup and breakdown:
Assign setup/breakdown roles to athletes. 5 athletes breaking down 3 stations takes 3 minutes; one coach breaking them down takes 10.
Transition windows:
Build 5-minute transition buffers between your team's slot and the next. Never run over your time — it damages relationships with other programs and creates scheduling domino effects.
Maximizing 60–90 Minute Slots
For shorter practice windows (common in shared facilities), structure is everything.
Tight practice template:
- 0:00–0:10: Warm-up with purpose (dynamic warm-up linked to session's skill focus)
- 0:10–0:35: Skill development block (station rotation)
- 0:35–1:00: Applied practice (small-sided game or team drill applying session's focus)
- 1:00–1:15: Competitive scrimmage
- 1:15–1:20: Debrief and close
One theme per practice. Programs that try to cover too much in short sessions cover nothing deeply. One theme practiced thoroughly produces more development than five themes touched superficially.
Homework and Self-Practice
When facility access is limited, extend development outside the facility:
- Assign 5–10 minutes of daily skill work that can be done anywhere (ball mastery, flexibility, conditioning)
- Use video resources for tactical understanding (players can study film at home)
- Encourage athletes to find informal practice opportunities with teammates
The constraint of limited facility time, if it drives better practice design and athlete ownership of development, can actually improve the quality of what happens in the facility.
