Overtraining Syndrome: How to Recognize It, Treat It, and Never Let It Happen

Overtraining syndrome can sideline an athlete for months or longer. Here's how to spot the early signs, understand the physiology, and build a program that never crosses the line.

The Training Load Equation

Adaptation happens when training stress slightly exceeds capacity, followed by adequate recovery. Overtraining happens when training load consistently exceeds recovery capacity — when the adaptation process never completes before the next stressor arrives.

The Spectrum

Functional Overreaching (FOR): Planned short-term increase above tolerance. Performance temporarily decreases, rebounds with 1–2 weeks of reduced load. Intentional and beneficial.

Non-Functional Overreaching (NFOR): Unplanned. Significant performance decrease. Requires 2–6 weeks recovery. No rebound without intervention.

Overtraining Syndrome (OTS): Severe, prolonged. Performance suppressed for months. Hormonal dysregulation, immune dysfunction, psychological symptoms. Requires near-complete rest for weeks to months.

Warning Signs Coaches Should Watch For

Performance: Plateau or decrease despite continued training, slower recovery between sessions, technique deterioration that was previously automatic.

Physical: Elevated resting heart rate (5+ beats/min above normal), soreness lingering beyond 48–72 hours, increased illness frequency, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances.

Psychological: Increased irritability, loss of competitive motivation, inability to concentrate, apathy toward previously enjoyable activities.

Prevention: Training Load Management

Quantify load: Use RPE × session duration in minutes = session load (arbitrary units). Sum weekly. Don't increase more than 10% per week.

Deload weeks: Every 3–4 weeks of progressive loading, reduce volume by 30–40% while maintaining intensity.

Daily wellness monitoring: Brief questionnaire (60 seconds) tracking sleep quality, soreness, mood, and motivation. A consistent 3+ drop across categories is a flag to reduce load immediately.

Treating Established OTS

  1. Immediate training load reduction
  2. Medical evaluation to rule out other causes
  3. Nutritional assessment (energy deficiency often co-occurs)
  4. Psychological support (OTS often includes depression)
  5. Gradual return guided by symptom resolution, not calendar

The athlete forced to rest now returns. The athlete pushed through OTS may not.
