The In-Season Conditioning Challenge
Preseason is straightforward: build fitness. In-season is more complex: maintain fitness while managing cumulative fatigue from competition. Push too hard and you create fatigue that impairs performance. Pull back too much and athletes lose fitness across the season.
The goal of in-season conditioning is not fitness improvement — it's maintenance of peak competitive readiness. This requires a fundamentally different approach than preseason training.
Physiological Basis
Fitness gains from preseason training are maintained with minimal stimulation — roughly 1–2 training sessions per week at sufficient intensity. Volume (total work) can be dramatically reduced without losing fitness, as long as intensity is maintained.
This is the key insight: reduce volume, maintain intensity.
A common mistake: reducing intensity (going easy) to avoid fatigue. This accelerates deconditioning. The correct approach is reducing total volume (fewer sets, shorter sessions, lower frequency) while preserving the intensity that maintains adaptation.
In-Season Conditioning Framework
Competition frequency governs training load:
1 competition/week: 2 conditioning sessions possible (excluding game)
2 competitions/week: 1 conditioning session maximum
3+ competitions/week: Conditioning comes primarily from games; maintenance only
Session structure (for 1–2 maintenance sessions/week):
- Duration: 20–30 minutes (not 60+ minutes like preseason)
- Intensity: 80–90% of maximum effort (not reduced)
- Volume: 40–50% of preseason volume (significantly reduced)
- Focus: Sport-specific movement patterns, not general conditioning
Practical In-Season Conditioning Options
Metabolic conditioning (HIIT format):
15–20 minutes, high intensity intervals: 30 seconds work / 30 seconds rest, 6–10 rounds. Sport-specific exercises (agility patterns, acceleration runs, repeated sprint sequences).
Strength maintenance:
2 sets × 5–6 reps of primary compound movements at 80%+ of maximum. Sufficient to maintain strength adaptations with minimal soreness and recovery demand.
Game-derived conditioning:
Competitive practice sessions (small-sided games, conditioning games) produce high conditioning stimulus without the psychological burden of traditional conditioning.
Tapering before important competitions:
In the 3–5 days before a significant competition (playoffs, championships), eliminate supplemental conditioning entirely. Trust the preseason training bank and prepare tactically/mentally.
Monitoring Fatigue
Track athlete readiness daily during competitive periods:
- Subjective wellness (mood, energy, soreness: 1–5)
- Heart rate variability (if using wearables)
- Training load (RPE × duration)
When athletes show cumulative fatigue markers (wellness < 3 on 3+ consecutive days), reduce training load regardless of planned schedule. Freshness going into competition matters more than completing a planned session.
Common In-Season Conditioning Mistakes
- Running heavy conditioning sessions the day after competition — athletes haven't recovered from game load
- Maintaining preseason volume — creates chronic fatigue that degrades season-end performance
- Dropping intensity to "be easy" on athletes — eliminates maintenance stimulus
- Conditioning during skill practice time — reduces technical development quality
- Not tapering before important competitions — athletes arrive fatigued rather than fresh
